Bringing the medical community together to advance care for mito patients

The Mito Medical Network is a newly formed professional body for all healthcare professionals working in the area of mitochondrial disease. Our network includes specialists and other medical practitioners, clinical researchers, nurses, allied health and other healthcare providers. By collaborating and unifying with all those who manage mitochondrial patients nationally, we strive to advance their daily medical care.

Lisa, John, Kahlia and Dylan have again done amazing work in bringing together the community in support of Matt and his legacy – Matt’s Mito Mission. This most adventurous of funding raising trips went ahead again this year in April. Thirty-three riders on their ‘postie’ bikes, left Londonderry to travel nearly 2000kms through the NSW and Queensland outback over 9 days to raise funds for MMN.
A very big THANKS again to Matt’s family and ALL the riders, for their support of our network and its work. Such a great event, enjoyed by all, even though it is tough going at times, a few falls, lots of bumps, many aches, and red dust. Each year the event has raised around $40,000 for the MMN. Together, we all hope to support families through their individual mitochondrial journey. Given the unique nature of this disease, increased medical knowledge, skills and understanding is vital for mitochondrial patients, in order to improve their quality of life.

Seven new MBS items have been launched for mitochondrial genomic testing, starting Nov 1st 2023.

HYBRID EVENT (Online or in Person)
As a community dedicated to understanding and managing mitochondrial disease, we recognise the importance of sharing knowledge, experiences, and the latest advancements. We are thrilled to have Professor Carolyn Sue, a leading expert in the field, preside over the day’s activities, which will include a series of informative talks and opportunities to connect with support resources.

Another stellar supporter of MMN, Board Director, Martine Vanderspuy again opened her gallery in Northbridge – for a fund-raising evening. The gallery exhibits the work of over 40 Australian artists, selling origin art along with unique jewellery. The night was enjoyed by all, and some were even fortunate enough to take home purchases of beautiful art and jewellery.

Seven New MBS items for Mito Genetic Testing

Starting Nov 1st 2023, a major victory in the diagnostic odyssey of mitochondrial diseases (mito) occurred, as specialists can now offer nationally funded access to these ‘gold standard’ tests through Medicare.

What We Do

Advancing the clinical management of the mito community is paramount to our purpose, vision and goals. We aim to achieve this through increasing medical awareness, education, standards and clinical research networking, whilst advocating to all key stakeholders in the patient’s medical care.

The Need

Although mitochondrial disease was first conceptualised around 1960, its clinical, diagnostic, and genetic complexities has markedly hindered our understanding of the illness.  Due to ill-defined symptoms, diagnostic odysseys, complex diagnoses and a void of treatment options, the care of the mitochondrial patient has evolved into a fragmented array of management plans.  To advance patient care, the time has come to integrate mitochondrial management nationally through a holistic and unified approach.
